Playaz Lounge Crew (PLC)
Few artists today, mainstream or underground, can truly bring their everyday life and attitude into their music. PLC is an exception. Born out of a symbiotic relationship between two MC’s who are as similar as they are different, PLC has risen from basement recordings, to mixtapes, to national independent hip hop success. PLC fuses rock, hardcore, comedy, and underground hip-hip into a style of music they call “HYPE HOP”. With unmatched intensity and without unnecessary gimmicks, PLC takes the everyman approach, disregarding materialistic rap in favor of a unique combination of high energy and real life.
Ironic as it is to be where they are today, Mereness and Dirty D got their start in entertainment while the two were in high school, producing a live cable access television show called “The Playaz Lounge”. It was during this time (2001) that PLC started to refer to themselves as the “Playaz Lounge Crew”. Experimentation with music montages, live hip-hop performances and freestyle battles gave rise to their interest in making and performing music.
PL3-The Mixtape, PLC’s debut full-length album was self-released in early 2004. PLC worked hard to become more than a blip on the radar screen that is local hip-hop in the Twin Cities. Through constant street promotion and a rigorous show schedule, PLC slowly began to establish their place in underground hip-hop.
Double Penetration?, the sophomore release from PLC, and their first on local hip-hop label Loonatix Productions, was recorded as an in your face, aggressive style album, born out of their live performances. Experimental in production and concept, DP? is a hard-edged, fast paced, musical journey through the minds of Mereness and Dirty D.
In the summer of 2006, PLC co-headlined the “Serial MC’s Tour” (An 8-city Midwest/East Coast tour with stops including New York, Philadelphia, and Detroit) alongside Loonatix label mates Ruthless. In addition to the tour, PLC has shared the stage with a wealth of national artists including P.O.S., Tech N9ne, Goretex of Non-Phixion, Too $hort, Kottonmouth Kings, 2 Live Crew, Insane Clown Posse, Vanilla Ice, Rehab, R.A. the Rugged Man and many more.
PLC’s newest record “Hype Hop” was released on July 24th 2007 and features some of the greatest local and national underground talent. “Hype Hop” features production by PLC, Lazerbeak of Doomtree, UnderRated of Potluck and Suburban Noize Records, Fritz the Cat of Psychopathic Records, as well as EMS, Out of Bounds, and Loonatix Productions artist Professor Fresh. The record also features guest appearances from Eyedea, Potluck, Ruthless, Liquid Assassin, and more. The record will be available in select stores throughout the country as well as online at LoonatixShop.com.
